About ALMOST A CHEF…

I’ll skip the typical all about me, and instead explain why I decided to try my hand at blogging. If you would have asked me about blogging a year ago, I would have not even entertained the idea of doing it myself. I know there are a lot of food blogs, really good ones that I look at regularly. The purpose of me doing this isn’t just to jump on that bandwagon. I know that a blog can be many things: a learning place, a good photo gallery, and just a general escape from daily life.
I don’t think food, especially fine food, should be a bully. Everyone deserves to know, and should understand and appreciate things that so many people are passionate and interested in. Not only am I interested in food directly, but restaurants, kitchen equipment, and the whole family of things related intrigues me. I have been photographing the things I make (or attempt to make, in some cases) regularly for a couple of years. Not just as bragging material, but as a memory tool to look back at my progress. I figure that if not one person looks at this blog, I will at least have a “virtual notebook” of my projects.
If you want to know about me personally, I am 25 and living in Los Angeles. I’m not formally trained as far as cooking goes, and part of my point in having this blog is to show the process and results of trying new things in the kitchen. I’m transplanted from Montana, where I grew up with a Mother who catered professionally. Food was always around, especially baked things. It seems like only now can I look back and appreciate (and crave) the things that were plentiful then.
I actually remember the first thing I ever tried cooking on my own. I poured lemon yogurt into a pre-made pie crust, baked it, removed it from the oven and later presented this as a version of lemon curd. Needless to say, my Mom wasn’t happy that I used the oven while home alone, and the reviews weren’t spectacular. Let’s hope I have evolved a little.

July 9th, 2007 at 7:02 pmVery well done. I was VERY surprised at your age, then as I thought about it, I was never trained professionally but grew up with everything fresh and good cooks. You have a real gift and I enjoyed your blog. I hope you keep it up.

August 3rd, 2007 at 8:21 amhello there,
this is FANTASTIC! I must thank you for inspiring me. I love cooking and have been cooking food from various places but it never occured to me to take photographs…and look at my past achievements/failures…would you let me know more about this monthly meeting that people have posted about? Looks like food-lovers are meeting on a monthly basis or something.. I am in Culver city and would like to join this if it is open to public…

August 7th, 2007 at 8:28 pmThanks for the kind words Mugdah, the meeting I wrote about is actually online, someone decides a particular genre of food and many bloggers try their hand at it.

January 8th, 2008 at 7:05 pmFound your site as I googled Terroni - a restaurant recommendation from a friend (actually my hairdresser!). Also living in LA and quit the corporate life a year ago to attend the Cordon Bleu in Pasadena. Yeah - another inspired foodie. Will keep an eye on your site!
