comme Ça - Melrose Avenue

Comme Ca - Melrose commeca41.jpg

In the neighborhood of some of the world’s most revered fashion houses, famous restaurants, and art galleries, Melrose Heights, lies comme Ça, Chef David Myers’ (of Sona) latest venture into bringing significant cuisine to Los Angeles. The menu is traditional Parisian brasserie style, featuring many French classics. I will focus on brunch because I’ve found several dinner reviews of comme Ça, but few daytime accounts.

The layout of the restaurant is interesting, it’s still intimate while there is plenty of space. There is a full cheese bar, as well as a classic cocktail bar with old fashioned drinks and serious bartenders, something that establishes the restaurant beyond its trendy competition. Desserts are courtesy of Myers’ wife Michelle’s distinguished pâtisserie, Boule.

Comme Ça has an extensive brunch menu, with prices that are reasonable (>$20) for the quality, and as compared to other choices in the neighborhood. The dishes are nicely presented, and the execution from the kitchen seems thoughtful. Bruno’s quiche was a pair of small quiche, classically flavored with gruyere, shallots, and herbs. The texture was silken, and the flavor was rich without being heavy, a sign of the refinement of these simple plates. Even the matter-of-factly prepared Croque Monsieur and Madame looked fairly elegant on their plates, and tasted as comforting as those from a street café. The roasted fingerling potatoes (presented in Staub cast iron ramekins) were simple, nothing to write home about.

The brunch service was professional and courteous, it’s always nice when the server can properly pronounce the menu. There did, however, seem to be an unusual flow of employees pacing the restaurant for this time of day. Even though it was early, it felt as though we sat down as the first people were opening the restaurant and it wasn’t yet ready for business.

I like the black wall of spaces filled with stemware, porcelain, and other relics, but it borders on the edge of over thought and cluttered. During the day, the front dining room has potential to be a sun filled and cleanly black and white space (though more L.A. than Paris), but I couldn’t help but notice smudges on the white tufted booths - white vinyl is a problem, period. The concept seems workable, but instead of stylish bistro, I think it comes off as a little too trendy. Many have mentioned the plastic chairs (the chic relative of a lawn chair), but I think this is overblown. Apparently they also had a problem with the original bar seating, which has since been changed. There is certainly less chaos during the day, and also the opportunity to have a conversation without the incredible loudness the dining rooms hold at night.

Overall, comme Ça manages to set itself apart from the other upscale but casual French bistro inspired restaurants in its league. It’s a great choice for brunch, and there are fine options on the menu for anyone’s taste.

I feel like the “in” restaurant vibe has gotten the best of this place, but the most important thing is the food and it really is delicious, the wine list isn’t bad either!

First I love your Blog. The name, the banner, the lay out, great pictures, great subjects and of course the blog itself. I like the way you search for the perfect place to eat, to taste the best food, this is a pleasure to look at it and to read it. I like your “light” attitude about food.
I am “new” in the blogsphere and your blog is among my favorite ones… Bravo et a bientot j’espere

I want so much to love Comme Ca and while we dined there very early on in it’s life, it continues to fall short. Having relished a couple of wonderful nights at Sona, I figured Myers would knock a French brasserie out of the park. But alas - the steak frites are not great, the service was just OK, the acoustics are terrible and our waiter dropped 2 trays of drinks during one evening.
You on the other hand - have a terrific blog and a real talent for writing and food. Bravo
