MILK - Beverly Boulevard

MILK blood orange sorbet

I read a little blurb in the L.A. Times about Milk, a new ice cream shop on Beverly Boulevard, and found myself there a couple of days later. The space is attractive and almost industrial, while still managing to hold a little bit of the old fashioned ice cream parlor feeling. There is seating indoors and out, the latter of which I’m sure will be teeming come hot summer nights. There seem to be glass cases everywhere you look. These cases display things like hand-dipped ice cream bars, bon bons, macaron ice cream sandwiches, cookies, cakes, small pastries, and of course, their made on location ice cream. You can even have a custom ice cream sandwich made with the freshly baked cookies on hand. And yes, they sell Milk, Broguiere’s to be exact, as well as a random assortment of snacks to go.

Milk also offers a full breakfast and a nice lunch menu, with the typical fare of sandwiches, salads, and soups - which I have heard good things about, but not yet tried. I also can’t tell you about the handmade treats because we ordered the simplest of simple - one root beer float, and one scoop of blood orange sorbet. You might imagine that there isn’t enough to a root beer float to review, but this concoction of vanilla bean ice cream and a frosty bottle of IBC root beer was far beyond generic. The ice cream is rich and heavy, more complex than I expected, and absolutely perfect for a float. The sorbet was sharp and refreshing, without being too icy.

Milk is the baby of former Corporate Executive Chef at Patina, Bret Thompson and Patina pastry alum, Richard Yoshimura. Because of these credentials, I actually expected the selection and ambiance to be a little more refined, though was pleasantly surprised by the down to earth approach. The atmosphere and service are accommodating, but it still has that air of a brand new business, trying to get everything running smoothly.

In a city of Pinkberry obsession and disposable new businesses, I think Milk is a great addition to that arsenal of places you remember and crave. They have captured the balance of something an adult will appreciate and classic treats any kids would love. If you are in the mood for something cold and delicious - Milk will satisfy.

OMG!! I got to try their bacon cheeseburger this Saturday and it was one of THE BEST BURGER I HAVE EVER HAD! Especially since I’ve had the famous Kobe beef burger.

It literally melts in your mouth! Served in a big enough portion that is good for two.

Can’t wait to take my friends there.

i would advise against ever going here again. i walked in on a friday afternoon and three workers were inside the ice cream counter tasting with a wooden spoon and putting the SAME spoon into the other flavors. the people at the register were watching them and laughing. unless you think they always put spit in their ice cream i think that’s pretty disgusting
